The race was first run in 1897 and was contested over 1 mile (+/- 1600m) for a stake of 500 sovereigns.
The lightest weight of 38,5kg carried to victory in the July was by Nymagee in 1904 and Margin in 1916.

This year’s Vodacom Durban July is to be South Africa’s biggest race meeting, soak in the atmosphere and feast on the fashion, as you watch and be captivated by South Africa’s finest horses as they fight to the finish.
The Open Air Box sites situated in the Grandstand, on the 2nd floor, approximately 50m from the finish line, overlooking the Track and Tent Town. Each site holds a minimum of 14 guests, with access to our private tote facilities, private toilets and waitresses to serve you a complimentary bar service throughout the day.
We have large Picnic Baskets where the fresh food is neatly packed.
The picnic baskets would be lined with fabric and filled with the up market finger food in individual containers and wrapped with a bold silk ribbon. A printed menu of the contents will be included in the basket. The baskets can feed 14 people.
Fabric napkins would be included, knives for the pates & cheeses, actual mini wooden cheese board and scented hand sachets. The homemade dessert items will be neatly packed into plastic containers as well. If not eaten there, they can be taken home. Please be advised that the basket cannot be taken home.
