A tradition of over 100 years will be broken in 2010 when Africa's
greatest horseracing event, the Vodacom Durban July, moves from
its traditional slot of the first Saturday in July to the last
Saturday of the month. To avoid a clash with the World Cup as it
builds to a climax and also to comply with FIFA regulations governing
World Cup host cities, Gold Circle, the company that runs horse
racing in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, decided to move next
year's Vodacom Durban July to the last Saturday of the month, July
31.
The Durban July is South Africa's equivalent of
Britain's Royal Ascot with superb horse racing, high fashion, elegance,
fine cuisine and champagne. It is the one meeting of the year where
knowledge of horse racing is not a requirement to have a fantastic

The Durban July Handicap is a South African Thoroughbred horse race held annually on the first Saturday of July since 1897 at Greyville Racecourse in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Raced on turf, the Durban July Handicap is open to horses of all ages. It is South Africa's premier horse racing event and currently offers a purse of R2.5 million (app. US$360,000).
